I began my college journey quite a few years ago. I attended Southern California College in Costa Mesa, ran out of money after one year, got married and got a job. A few years later I attended Southwestern A/G College in Waxahachie, Texas for a year. Ran out of money and time. Then I attended Vanguard University (SCC changed their name), moved and couldn’t finish. Do you see a pattern emerging here? In my heart, though, I always wanted to finish my degree. It was something I needed to accomplish.
Then, one day I was looking into other options and came across Western Governors University in Salt Lake City, Utah. Their program sounded perfect for a guy like me. Study when you want or can, take test or write papers to complete the courses. No classrooms! I especially like the no classrooms part, even though I was a teacher and look forward to being one again. My problem is that I don’t always play well with others. I have established in this column that I’m not the most patient person around, and sitting in a classroom listening to someone ask a question that has already been answered twice is really frustrating to me. Really frustrating. So the idea of being able to work at my own pace and on my own schedule really appealed to me.
After all these years of searching and trying other schools and ideas, I finally found the school that fits me like a glove. If someone had decided to start a school just for Jerry Godsey, it would have been just like WGU. Hey, maybe WGU stands for Western Godsey University. Okay, probably not…
WGU began in 1996, and it took me 14 years to discover something that was so right for me.
I see people all the time who are looking at their lives and thinking, “I want more than this. I love my family, my stuff, yet there seems to be something missing.” What they don’t realize is that God has been in the shadows, gently poking and prodding their whole life. He’s always been there, he’s just been waiting for them to discover him.
The great thing about following God is that he’s not “one size fits all.” God’s plans for you are tailor made to fit just you. There is a huge difference between buying something off the rack and having it made just for you. When I weighed 430 pounds it was darn near impossible to find something that fit. Omar the Tentmaker can only make a certain number of shirts each year. It’s a lot nicer being able to go into the store and find something that fits, not that you’re hoping will fit, only to be disappointed again.
When you discover what God has for you, it will fit you and you alone. His plans for me aren’t like his plans for you, and he won’t make you a cookie cutter image of anybody else, either. My co-pastor at Remnant, Jeremiah Vik, has a totally different ministry style than I do. That’s what makes our partnership work. God has a plan for Jeremiah and he follows it, God has a different plan for me and I follow it. Awesome, totally different plans, but they work for each of us individually, and they work together for our church.
What is God’s plan for you? There’s only one way to discover it, and that is to get close to him. Start praying. Forget the “thee’s and thou’s” and just talk to him. Find a church and get into it. Find a church that fits you. Remnant doesn’t fit everybody, so find one that feels like home to you. Start trying churches out until you find the one that gives you the tools you need to follow God’s plan. The pastor can help you from there.
